Incidents Reported from Members of the Community:
11 January, 2012 - Attempted Carjacking – Langata By-Pass. A woman was traveling from Wilson Airport to the Lenana Forest Centre on the By-Pass road today at 5:15pm. There were a lot of vehicles going both directions on the road. However, as she crested a hill, 3 men armed with pistols appeared in the road and tried to stop her. She decided to drive at them with speed, and they jumped out of the way before firing any shots.
Please remember: It’s very tempting to use these by-passes during rush hour times when the roads are jammed with traffic. Most people think that since there are a lot of vehicles using these roads during busy times of the day, that they will be OK. However, this incident is a prime example of why this by-pass road should be avoided at all times.
10 January, 2012 – Armed Robbbery – Uhuru Highway near the Intercontinental Hotel. Two men were stuck in traffic at 8pm when two men with coats appeared either side of the vehicle, one at the passenger door and one at the driver’s door. They got close to the vehicle and opened their jackets showing pistols. They demanded that the occupants of the vehicle open the windows and proceeded to rob them of mobile phones, computers and cash.

Warning by the U.S. Embassy – 09 January, 2012
“This message is to remind U.S. citizens residing in or visiting Kenya that the Emergency Message issued on December 1, 2011 regarding security in Kenya is still in effect. U.S. citizens should report suspicious activity to the U.S Embassy at 20-363-6170 or Kenya_ACS@state.gov. The December 1st message is repeated below for your convenience:
“‘This message is to inform U.S. citizens residing in or visiting Kenya that the U.S. Embassy in Kenya continues to receive information of potential threats directed at prominent Kenyan facilities and areas where foreigners are known to frequently congregate, such as malls and night clubs. Recent kidnappings, cross-border military actions, and threats of retaliation have also increased security concerns along the land and maritime Kenya-Somalia border. U.S. citizens planning to visit Kenya are encouraged to exercise caution and to maintain situational awareness at all times, and to especially avoid beaches at night.
“‘The U.S. Embassy has restricted travel by U.S. government officials and their dependents to El Wak, Wajir, Garissa, Dadaab, Mandera, Liboi and Lamu. The U.S. Embassy has also taken measures to limit non-essential U.S. official travel to Kenya. Although these restrictions do not apply to travelers not associated with the U.S. government, private U.S. citizens should be take these measures into account when planning their travel, and seriously consider deferring travel at this time. All travel restrictions are reviewed on a regular basis and subject to modification.”
The British Foreign Commonwealth Office Travel Summary updated on 11 January states the following:
The Kenyan authorities have alterted the public to a heightened threat from terrorist attacks in Nairobi. We believe that terrorists may be in the final stages of planning attacks. Attacks could be indiscriminate and target Kenyan institutions as well as places where expatriates and foreign travellers gather, such as hotels, shopping centres and beaches. We strongly advise British naitonals to exercise extra vigilance and caution in plublic places and public events.

GENERAL SECURITY TIP:
Safety in Traffic Jams
As traffic jams become more and more a part of daily life in Nairobi, it’s important to note that thugs are taking advantage of this. It’s easy to become complacent and even bored while waiting for traffic to move. Below are general safety tips to consider:
1. Keep your doors locked at all times
2. Keep your windows up. If its’ hot and you don’t have air conditioning crack the windows enough to allow air to get in, but not enought for a hand or arm to fit through.
3. Do not read the newspaper or text or answer emails on your phone. Thugs look for targets that aren’t paying attention. It’s best to constantly monitor what is going on around you and be aware at all times. If you have a driver, make sure he is also alert and observing his surroundings.
4. There are a lot of hawkers that are legitimately selling things in the traffic. However, there are also reports of thugs posing as hawkers in order to get you to roll your window down in order to rob you. If you do decide to buy something, put your window down just low enough to make the transaction and then roll it up again.
5. If someone bumps your vehicle and pushes the side mirror in, do not roll your window down and push it out again. This is an old ruse used by thugs to gain access to your vehicle.
6. Keep all valuables out of site.
